Artist Statement
My work changes constantly, I use what is around me to define a feeling, reaction, or situation and don’t feel the pressure of creating something beautiful because it’s secondary to how it makes me feel when making it.
While I primarily focus on collage and digital art I have also experimented with mediums such as printmaking and music. I enjoy collage and digital arts because they allow me to change meaning in something that already exists without limiting my own creativity. Sometimes the subject of my art is about friends, family, or a certain feeling but often the art is inspired by something I see in my life that doesn’t necessarily have meaning behind it.
What I hope to accomplish by doing this project is to represent who I am by using a medium which I am unfamiliar with in order to highlight experimentation and change in artistic nature. By making a doll, I wish to create a more interactive kind of self portrait that can evolve over time instead of being set in stone. The doll can change, things can be taken away or added, and therefore it is never complete.
Despite challenges faced such as my sewing skills and the doll’s hair, I am happy that I chose to work with textiles in this way and while it isn't perfect, I am proud of the outcome.
